Have you ever had one of those days where, despite your best intentions, everything just seems to go wrong? That was my experience on what was supposed to be a relaxing kayaking trip. Spoiler alert: it didn’t go as planned.
The day started with all the right intentions. I loaded the kayak onto the roof of the car, packed a picnic, and brought along a change of clothes, envisioning a serene day on the water. But from the moment we set off, anxiety crept in. I was paranoid that the kayak would somehow slip off the roof, taking the top of my car with it. This irrational fear had me gripping the steering wheel so tightly that I gave myself a headache.
We finally arrived at the kayaking site, and the scenery was just as beautiful as I had imagined. It was the perfect setting for a day of paddling and picnicking. There was just one small problem: no parking. Anywhere. After a few futile laps around the area, I found myself having to turn the car around in a narrow country lane, a nerve-wracking feat in itself.
At this point, the excitement of the day had been replaced by frustration and disappointment. But I wasn’t ready to give up just yet. I quickly came up with Plan B—another beach, a different location. I plugged the new destination into the sat nav and set off again, determined to salvage the day.
However, as we started driving, that overwhelming feeling of defeat crept in. The frustration, the tension, the headache—it all built up until I finally thought, “Maybe I should just give up.” The day had taken a wrong turn, both literally and figuratively, and I didn’t have the energy to fight it anymore. So, I set the sat nav to drive home.
As I reflect on that day, it’s a reminder that not every adventure goes according to plan. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, things just don’t work out. And that’s okay. I’m choosing to see this “disaster” as a learning experience—next time, I’ll plan a little better, breathe a little deeper, and remember that the journey is just as important as the destination.
