What a week! - Summer School.

What a week it’s been! As I sit here with my feet aching and my body weary, I can’t help but smile. Over the past five days, I’ve clocked in an incredible 75,000 steps. Yes, my feet hurt, and yes, I’m exhausted, but it’s been worth every single step. This week was special—it was the week we hosted our summer school for children transitioning into Year 7.

The purpose of our summer school was simple yet profound: to help these young students ease into the big change they’re about to face in September. Moving into Year 7 is a significant milestone, and it can be daunting. New faces, new routines, and a new environment can stir up a lot of anxiety. So, what better way to help them navigate this transition than through a week filled with fun, friendship, and activities designed to bring out the best in them?

From the moment the children arrived, there was a mix of excitement and nervousness in the air, but that quickly melted away as the activities kicked off. We organised a variety of engaging sessions—everything from making rockets to learning about Shakespeare. The goal was not only too entertain but also to encourage the students to step out of their comfort zones, try new things, and most importantly, meet new friends.

We spent time watching the film Coco, which led into an enlightening discussion about the Day of the Dead. The children were fascinated by the traditions and meanings behind this vibrant celebration. It opened their eyes to different cultures and the importance of remembering those who have passed on.

Of course, the week wasn’t without its challenges. Keeping up with the energy of a group of excited 11-year-olds is no small feat! By the end of each day, I could feel the toll it was taking on my body. But the tiredness was always overshadowed by the satisfaction of knowing we were making a difference in these children’s lives.

As the week wrapped up, it was heartwarming to see how much the students had grown in such a short time. They started the week as strangers, but they left with new friendships, greater confidence, and a readiness for the journey ahead in Year 7.

So, while my feet may be sore and my energy levels low, my heart is full. This week was more than just about racking up steps—it was about laying down the first steps on a new path for these young students. And I wouldn’t trade that for anything.

Now, after a busy and tiring but fun week, I’m finally taking a moment to relax. I’m sat in the bath with some Maltesers, letting the warmth, soak away the aches and enjoying a well-deserved treat. Here’s to a bit of self-care and to the wonderful memories made this week. I can’t wait to see what these amazing students will achieve in the future!
